thoughts on calvinism
I don’t like the god I find in calvinism.
A god who controls everything, like a strict micromanager, must be held responsible for everything. He is the boss that refuses to delegate power who scoffs at the very idea of free will. This god is not able to create beings with power that mirror his own because that would lead to uncontrollable chaos in which there is no glory for himself, nor is there any possible outcome except dissaster. This god plans specifically, yet saves randomly. Due to his tame nature, this god is easily boiled down to fit into text books and his character is easy to wrap your human mind around. His singular plan is the only one that will work, in which all of humanity to him is but a puppet. And what is the product of this plan? His glorification. Because above all else he is about his own glory. His sacrifice wasn’t a rescue mission to save all mankind out of his love, but an act of self exaltation to save some of us to prove his power and might. What kind of creator creates creatures who in their own nature are depraved? How just is the god that randomly chooses whom he saves from the destruction all deserve? Who is this Jesus who’s grace is partial and mercy is limited?
If the god of Calvinism is THE god, I find it strange that I can imagine a different God. A God who in many ways is superior to the god I find in Calvinism. A God who does everything out of love. He creates in love. He heals out of love. He came to us because of His love. He sacrifices Himself out of love. He offers grace because of his great love. He redeems in love. He has no need to seek His own glory, because quite naturally, every asset of the creation glorifies the Creator. Even a fallen creation. A God that has a plan, not to save some, but to save as many as possible. A God who truly is all-powerful because he even works in the chaos. A God who truly is all-knowing because he even knows the stuff he didn’t choose. A God who truly is both completely just and completely gracious because he offers salvation to all mankind not just a select group. This God creates man in his own image, giving man the power to choose. And in the act of transferring some power, He also transfers responsibility. So ultimately we are responsible for the shape of the world, not God. He remains innocent. And He is powerful enough to work in all situations. Through our good decisions, and our poor decisions, the eventual outcome is His Glory. Even when we totally miss it, it can work for His good, and His glory. He is a God whose creation isn’t totally lost, whose salvation is ours for the taking, whose atonement knows no bounds, and whose creation is empowered by God given free will.
Is it strange that I with my human mind can fathom a more powerful being than the god of Calvinism?
