thoughts on atheism

”The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” - Brennan Manning

Atheists read that phrase and find it absurd.  Of course that’s not the reason most folks don’t believe in a higher power.  There’s all kinds of other arguments to why this imaginary Santa-like-father-figure in the sky is not probable; propositions made by scientists, reason dictated by philosophers, pains and sorrows pointed out by humanitarians, and a complete disconnect from average joes.

No loving God would create a world like the one we live in today.  And we can all agree on that.  The reason the world is the way it is isn’t because of Him.  It’s because of us.

We broke the world.  Can we agree on that?

So, if there is a God, why doesn’t he come down here and help us fix it?  Or at least show us the way to do it?  Isn’t that the least he could do?

“God so loved the world that he gave his only son”

The problem is that if Christ was who he said he was and you believe that, it should change who you are.  But for the most part we’re still selfish, lying, cheating, prideful, spiteful creatures.  So either Christ isn’t who he said he was, or we aren’t who we say we are.

How can we pray for God to change the world, when we won’t even let him change us?

How can an atheist believe in God if our actions do nothing but help their stance?
