Best/Worst of 2011
I meant to do a few posts on the best and worst of 2011. I may get around to it. Not that anyone cares what I think. But to start off here’s my best and worst days of 2011. Worst day of 2011?  That’d be September 10th.  I was in Disney World of all places (Animal Kingdom actually).  I got a call from my dad who was dog-sitting for us, and had taken my dog to the vet.  I had to...

my "career"
Can I be honest? Sometimes ministry as a career seems more like just a career. I sometimes get caught up thinking what I’m doing is just a job.  I’m sitting behind a desk, checking emails, making connections, keeping “customers” happy, pleasing the right people and getting a paycheck so my wife and I can eat this week. Then I read this… “Don’t work for the...

life in dog years
I lost a good friend last Saturday. His name was Reese. He belong to our family for 11 years; most of his life. He was a pembroke welsh corgi. For the past year, he’s lived with Lauren and me. He was put to sleep while I was on vacation. When I came home this weekend, I went to my parents house to see where he’d been burried. I began thinking about those 11 years we spent together....

The dumbest thing I've ever read
“The God of Calvin is the good shepherd, who names and numbers his sheep, who saves the lost sheep and fends off the wolf. The God of Wesley is the hireling, who knows not the flock by name and number, who lets the sheep go astray and be eaten by the wolf. Which is more loving, I ask? - Steve Hays” Litterally LOL’d on that one.  Wesley’s God does in fact allow sheep to...

thoughts on a (somewhat) white christmas
Yesterday was Christmas in Alabama, as it is most everywhere else. It also snowed.  Not heavily.  Just a very nice dusting really. I’ve often said I would like the snow more if Alabamians didn’t act as if they were in an apocalyptic situation every time a snow flake fell. However yesterday, driving through the snowy weather to my parents house, and then today, driving through some...

Things I learned at Catalyst 2010: Day One
- Chick-fil-a has their crap together, so you don’t have to. - When you mix violin, beatboxing, praise-team, a guy tapping on an ipad, an Eminem song and a children’s choir there is tension. - the tension is good. - people live as if there is something in the world that can fully satisfy their appetite.  i know it’s true, because i’m guilty of it. - I can’t trade...

Catalyst Labs 2010
Bits and pieces of notable moments from today: Started off by parking in the wrong lot.  We walked far enough to knock the walls of Jericho down a couple times over. Tyler Wigg Stevenson made me care about nuclear war.  I haven’t thought about it since that Very Special Alvin and The Chipmunks episode where they went to the USSR after the wall came down. Jamie Tworkowski and Scott...

thoughts on calvinism
I don’t like the god I find in calvinism. A god who controls everything, like a strict micromanager, must be held responsible for everything.  He is the boss that refuses to delegate power who scoffs at the very idea of free will.  This god is not able to create beings with power that mirror his own because that would lead to uncontrollable chaos in which there is no glory for himself, nor...

thoughts on atheism
”The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” - Brennan Manning Atheists read that phrase and find it absurd.  Of course that’s not the reason most folks don’t believe in a higher power.  There’s...

Something I found I wrote down a while back “if my life amounts to anything more than a bum on the corner holding a ‘will work for food’ sign then know that God will get all the glory for it He alone is worthy of the praise i cannot win but with Him, i will never lose”

My Wolf Pack
When we read the bible it’s so easy to see biblical juggernauts like Moses and David and Paul and see them as these lone guns that came, saw, and conquered in the name of Yahweh. To think that Moses was THE guy that led the children out of egypt. And David was THE guy that was a man after God’s own heart. And Paul was THE guy who really kicked off this whole Christianity thing to...

thoughts on faith
The true opposite of faith is not doubt. That’s like saying “exercise is the opposite of fat” No.  The opposite of exercise is sitting around and being lazy. Faith is the bridge we use to cross over the unknown and the unseen into belief. Without doubt there is no need for faith. The true opposite of faith is fear. Fear gives in to the doubt, just as laziness gives in to...

WatchWatch
Next Wednesday, we’re starting a two-part series next Wednesday called MY FAITH. Two months ago I started wrestling with God on the issue of FAITH.  As Christians we are supposed to be “people of faith” yet a lot of times I feel like we actually don’t want anything to do with the subject.  When we ask God for something we want to see physical evidence for it.  We want tangible. results. now. But...

words you thought you'd never hear from me.
I think macs are awesome. They are beautiful, powerful machines with specs and technology that would cause mere mortals minds to melt like the faces of nazi soldiers in Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Again and again they set the precedent for each new generation of technology.  In short they are some of the fastest, slickest, and most powerful machines on the planet and they do what they do so...
